MICR is on a mission to expand academic and athletic opportunities in low-income communities through the power of rugby. MICR was founded by two Memphis educators in 2012 who wanted to make an impact outside of the classroom walls. Instead of starting an organization- Shane Young and Devin O’Brien simply launched rugby programs in the neighborhoods and schools where they taught. The two teams- Kingsbury Falcons & Power Center Knights- paved the way for what would become an evolved impact model for even more schools and students through the 901. In 2015, MICR’s first girl’s programs were founded and in 2018, we expanded to reach middle and elementary students. Entering its 9th year, MICR now serves approximately 300 student-athletes throughout Memphis with a robust alumni support program designed to increase opportunity and persistence rates for our college students.
